Two centuries of donations and bequests
The Calvet Foundation is an institution which is two centuries old. Based in Avignon, it is the product of the wishes of a great man: Esprit Calvet.
A great collector, he was trained as a physiocrat and devoted his entire life to medicine and the arts. Motivated by generosity and spiritual demands, he bequeathed all his worldly goods to the institution which, later, was going to bear his name.
Today, the Calvet Foundation is one of the largest independent public institutions in France responsible for the management of art heritage. It is also one of the first institutions to have given rise to the concept of museums.
Its objectives: administer and develop the heritage of personal belongings and real estate bequeathed by Calvet. The Foundation manages a huge collection of furniture and real estate.
Buildings, houses, agricultural properties, collections, works of art, libraries… donations and bequests, originating from local and international sources (Avignon, Provence, Paris, Champagne, Italy, Britain...) have succeeded each other in their thousands since 1811.
You too can help the Foundation.
