Extract from the will of Auguste LAJARD

Bequest from Auguste LAJARD, 1901
 

Auguste LAJARD, former deputy Mayor of Avignon, former President of the Court of Commerce of Avignon, who died on 13 April 1901. – Bequest of his townhouse, valued at 100,000 francs and art objects. His public will dating from 26 June 1898 stipulates:  

"I leave to the Calvet Museum the house I own in Avignon, rue Joseph-Vernet, no. 83, with all its parts and outbuildings, without any exception or reserve, including the chapel, in a word, all the buildings, gardens and terraces included between rue Joseph Vernet and the Collège d'Annecy, the whole to serve, if possible, for establishing the collections and the Requien library, recently moved from the Immeuble Saint-Martial."
 

"It is my wish that this building be managed by Calvet’s executors, in accordance with the measures outlined in the will of the latter, without the Municipality of Avignon being able to expropriate, under whatever pretext, all or part of this building, or interfere in any way in its administration."
 

“I also bequeath all the furniture, paintings, mirrors contained in the afore-mentioned building, without any exceptions or any reserve; furthermore, to facilitate and enable the installation of the Requien Museum in the house which I have bequeathed above, I leave to the afore-mentioned Calvet Museum, and under the same conditions as those mentioned above, the sum of one hundred thousand francs; this sum of one hundred thousand francs will be used by Calvet’s executors for any removal work and the payment of any expenses.
In another public will from 2 January 1899, A. Lajard modified the bequest of his furniture, sharing it between the Calvet Museum, for all items of artistic value, and Sainte-Marthe Hospital for the rest."

 

By a handwritten codicil dating from 13 October 1900, the afore-mentioned measures were confirmed, under the following condition:
 

“If the Municipality of Avignon attempted to have transferred to its own ownership, for the account of the Calvet Museum, the bequest which I have made to this establishment, this bequest will be rendered null and void.”
 

Acceptance authorised by a decree of the Council of State on 9 December 1905.
