Earthenware from Iznik.
A donation from Georges REBOUL to the Calvet Foundation. The objects are exhibited at the Calvet Museum. Consult the on-line earthenware catalogue.
A new donation in the field of extra-European decorative arts has arrived at the Calvet Museum. It is a generous donation from Doctor Georges REBOUL, a citizen of Avignon for almost fifty years and founder of a medical establishment at the cutting edge of science, in particular in a field of work of great concern to mankind: cancer screening.
A daily witness to suffering, in the privacy of his work space, Doctor Georges REBOUL surrounded himself with works of art which can be seen as being “objects of consolation”, supports for a dream world, no doubt intended as a means of escape, but, nonetheless, necessary.
Iznik art offers stunning perspectives of an Orient which is not only mythical, but a creator of shapes unknown in Europe, originating from Central Asia which, under the fingers of potters and painters from Anatolia, have achieved a perfect incandescence of colours and an imperial authority of drawing.
Marie-Josée ROIG,
Mayor of Avignon,
President of the Calvet Foundation.
