Acquisition of letters from the Marquis of CAUMONT.
The Foundation has acquired some important letters from Marquis CAUMONT at an auction in Drouot, concerning, in particular, Parisian life and the literary salons of the 18th century. These letters complete the Calvet Library.
With Calvet wishing to preserve the originality of his library, it was the municipality which, in recognition, made the Calvet Library the only Library in Avignon: it donated to it the religious collections confiscated during the Revolution, thus allowing it to become incomparably rich.
The Library is currently based in the heart of the town, in the former Palace of Cardinal Annibal Ceccano, built in the 14th century, and called "Livrée Ceccano".
Even by 1930, Joseph Girard, an efficient and methodical Curator, counted “85,401 ancient printed works [...], 703 incunabula, 5,367 manuscripts, 371 series of engravings".
The library has collected many items over the years: today it contains 250,000 printed volumes, almost 7,000 manuscripts and a collection of drawings and engravings with approximately 60,000 items…
