The Northern Masters
In March 2006, a large exhibition has opened in the Calvet Museum in Avignon, devoted to the Northern, Flemish, Dutch and German Schools.
For the first time, the museum has exhibited its most important works, some of which are very rare, from its large art history collection. Some 90 paintings belonging to these schools, selected from among the 170 held at the museum, is offering a complete view from the 15th to the 19th century, through the works of the Masters of Anvers, Cologne, Brussels, Harlem and Amsterdam.
At the same time, thanks to the support of the Calvet Foundation and help from the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the first catalogue devoted to its northern painters has been published. All the works from the collection, from the most modest to the most important, are listed, reproduced, analysed and commented upon in the book. Their subjects, often difficult to understand for 21st century viewers are presented with copious explanations. Everything known about the lives of the painters, which for many Masters is rare in France, are recounted.
Placed by the book’s authors, Sylvain Boyer and Franck Guillaume, within the rich context of the production of the former Netherlands (present-day Benelux) and Germany, these works have now found their rightful place in the rich, but still not very well known collection of the Calvet Museum in Avignon.
Finally, in summer 2006, thanks to an exceptional loan from the Thyssen Museum in Madrid, a masterpiece by Rubens, the great Flemish Master, has been presented to the public of Avignon, thus completing this Northern season at the Calvet Museum.
